Alison Bice's first comedy festival show(The Wizard of Bice) takes us into the mind of a young and upcoming comedian as they try to break into the industry. The show starts with Alison tyring to get into a comedy awards night, without success. Dispersed throughout the show there are many Melbourne comedy scene 'in-jokes' which are funny if you are a regular local comedy fan. The show relies heavily on animation and the participation of other local comedians in guest roles as Alison is drawn into a crazy game show where she must try to conquer her demons and find the Wizard of Bice. The animation was excellent and beautifully put together but it detracted from her performance as it dominated the show. I wanted to see more of Alison Bice the comedian and was looking forward to some of the dark and absurdest humour that she does so well. We did get glimpses of it throughout the show and this was where her performance really worked. Alison Bice is very funny young comedian and the Wizard of Bice is an ambitious and creative project for a first comedy festival show that she almost pulls off. She is definitely one to watch, and should be commended for attempting such a different and creative first show.
