It was weird going back upstairs at the Portland Hotel. The last time I went there was for an 'apocalyptic' drum and base night circa 2003. This time there was a stage, chairs on the dance floor and the dodgy room of mirrors appeared to have become the backstage area. Kim Hope put on an energetic show to a small group of punters. She seemed nervous but assured us that she's just a naturally anxious person. The show 'rolled' along at a good pace and contained some cracking laughs, most of which seemed to go down better with the female members of the audience. It was a fairly brave performance, the subject matter being Kim's rollercoaster life including a bout of depression and mostly bad, although often funny, experiences with men. A well-rehearsed, engaging show but maybe a bit long at an hour.
Kim Hope - Rollercoaster. At the Portland Hotel.
